Atropine sulphate has a variety of Uses, 1-: in anaesthetic practice as a premedicament and to counteract the muscarinic effects of anticholinesterases like neostigmine and other parasynpathomimetics; 2- antispasmodic in gast•ointestinal disorders; 3- adjunct to opioid analgesics for the symptomatic reliefofbiliary or renal colic; 4- to treat bradycardia; to treat or prevent bronchospasm; . . ..etc 5- Atropine sulphate is used topically as a mydriatic and cycloplegic in ophthalmology
Precautions: due to its muscarinic adverse effects. It is contra-indicated in prostatic enlargement, in whom it may lead to urinary retention, and in those with paralytic ileus or pyloric stenosis. In patients with ulcerative colitis its use may lead to ileus or megacolon. It is not given to patients with angle-closure glaucoma or with a narrow angle between the iris & cornea, since it ma raise infra-ocular ressure and precipitate an acute attack.
