Mechanism:an enzyme that acts by breaking down the amino acid I-asparagine to aspartic acid and ammonia. It interferes with the growth of those malignant cells which, unlike most healthy cells.
Uses: for the induction of remissions in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia .
Adverse effects: Liver function abnormalities occur in many patients, decreased blood concentrations of fibrinogen and clotting factors, hypoalbuminaemia. Hnerammonaemia, due to the production of ammonia from asparagine, may occur. Uraemia, and occasionally renal failure.
Dosage: I.V. in a Dose of 1000 units/kg daily for 10 days after treatment with vincristine and prednisone or prednisolone, or I.M. in a Dose of 6000 units/m2 given every third day for 9 Doses during ttt with vincristine and prednisone or prednisolone.
